GET TO KNOW: Surfski World Champion Hayley Nixon

    By Kirsten van Heerden | Features | 0 comment | 30 August, 2019 | 0
    1. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

I think perfect happiness is like the horizon, you’re never quite there but it’s still pretty beautiful and magical on your way out there 🙂 I am happy. But I have days when my work or my training, a race result or a nasty comment, or a low bank balance, can upset me or stress me out. Perfect happiness would be a content soul, comfortable with the way everything is, not yearning for more or worrying about something else. I think I’m too competitive and driven and restless to ever really be 100% content. But I am happy with the ups and downs and it challenges me to know that I need to do more so that there are more good days than bad days.

    1. What is your pet hate?

Gossip. Yes, we all discuss things and people but I am not one of those people who relishes in other people’s drama, I can’t stand it.

    1. What do you fear?

Struggling financially. That’s a big one! I am living an amazing life, full of wonderful adventures and travels and life experience, but will it pay my bills and support my family one day. That’s why we need to think further than our sports goals, those may well have a shelf-life.

    1. What is the strangest instruction your coach has ever given you?

When I wasn’t selected for the 2012 Olympics one of the coaches suggested I go climb Mt Everest instead. I’m not sure if that was an insult or a compliment 😉

    1. What is your greatest extravagance?

Coffee maybe??!! We do spend a lot of money on coffee beans every month!

    1. What words/phrases do you overuse?

“Please put your dishes in the dishwasher!!!” – I use that phrase a lot on my husband!

    1. What talent (outside of sport) would you like to have?

I would like to be a good parent… we are yet to go down that road but I really hope we can be great parents, from what I have observed, it’s not any easy thing to get right all the time.

    1. What movie/book should everyone watch/read?

    Book: The Power of One

    Movie: Lion.

    1. What is your favourite place to rest?

I love to be by water, be it the ocean or a river or dam. It’s my restful space. I need to know I can lie still or get up and be active, it’s my choice, I need both of those options together in order to relax.
