What it means to me to be an athlete

    By Kirsten van Heerden | Ambassadors | 0 comment | 31 January, 2017 | 1

The best thing about me being an athlete is the fact that I got to identify and live my passion. It is special and it allowed me an opportunity to live my dream, be responsible and have the feeling of being in control even when things aren’t going well.

Being an athlete, I have learnt to be the leader of my own race. I have become creative in preparing for events, have a different attitude and a better way of countering challenges (gym, time management, work, family matters etc.), gained confidence and have a great feeling of being satisfied with my own self and thoughts.

The toughest situations in life become the norm, but they become more exciting than challenging. Having to eat healthy, being disciplined in following training programmes, listening and taking advice from different people and staying away from things that could affect my dream. People sometimes believe that you living a better or an easy life as an athlete, but they don’t see the daily personal struggles.

I get to sit back and look at all the things I could have done better, but at the same time get to be proud of all my hard work. The challenges I have faced have all made me the person I am today. The feeling of being considerate of others, respect and pride in myself is always there. I value every opportunity and support in my sporting journey because of my background.

I do have weaknesses, I’m human. But the will of rising above them gives me strength even when I feel weak. An athlete life is just the best life. Power to all, especially female athletes out there.
